We'll add something like the old ratings, but I must admit, with the beta status of the site we've got a lot more pressing issues. That said, we dumped the ratings because the old code was just messy and didn't translate well to our new system. It could have been done, but I'm lazy. :-)
I'd say in the mean time, use the new comments that are attached to book to be your voice. As I doubt those comments will be flooded, a simple "don't waste your time with this book" would probably suffice. I know that's not as easy as clicking a drop down, but my to-do list is long and I can't think of a better work around for now.
I've bookmarked this comment (w00t!), so I won't forget about your request.

Do we still rate the books we post, or just post them? I liked the old rating system because you could qualify the books, although you could argue you wouldn't post them unless they were worth reading (or not in the case of people who gave books poor ratings).
One thing I always struggled with in respect to the rating system is that I would recommend different books for different reasons, and for some people/purposes they would elicit different ratings (i.e. enjoyable to read vs. very good info on a particular but perhaps arcane topic).
Perhaps it's just simpler to recommend books for most people, but I for one at least liked the old system because you could not only recommend books to read, but also ones to avoid wasting your time on. Or maybe I'm just missing something...
