We've actually gotten relatively little spam. What we have gotten has mostly been in the form of news and poll submissions. None of the comments that have been spam were deleted, but by default you can't see them unless you lower your comment threshold to show score 0 comments. All of the score 0's are not rendered by default (both in threads and on the front page).
Another thing that I think helps us is that we're not running on a generic package of code. Many site admins simply download a code structure and then tweak it to match their site's needs. This makes it easier for spammers to target those packages and brute force their auto-spam on to sites that implement them. It's kinda like if you know how to hot wire one '93 Toyota Corolla, you can probably hot wire 90% of all Corollas from that year; but we built our car from scratch. Since no other sites run on OmniNerd code, we're a one-of-a-kind target. I'm sure as we grow our "security through obscurity" will die down, but I know that's why we've avoided a lot of the common stuff you see on other sites. Our error logs are full of spam and hack attempts, but none seem to be anything other than generic attacks.
... how do you prevent Viagra Ads from appearing?
Well, they recognize that high ranking OmniNerds do not need Viagra. :-) It's one of the positive benefits of membership.
