South Park deserves credit for being fearless about prodding sacred cows and for being willing to offend everyone. It is often tasteless and crass but never preachy and always funny. Most of these cartoons show America laughing at itself and that is intelligent and mature.
Have to disagree, sort of. Family Guy requires no intelligence whatsoever, only a passing knowledge of 80's/90s pop culture. All of the humor is completely random and totally lacking in originality. Half of the gags are stolen directly from the Simpsons and the other half are mindless cut-aways to stupid flashbacks that are only midly amusing because they're so bizarre. It's really a stupid show. It can't compare to the Simpsons, South Park or even Beavis and Butthead.

And the early votes are in
Odd that the Simpsons is getting a lot of early votes. The humor in the Simpsons, while often clever and well thought out, isn't generally subtle. I was torn between Animaniacs and Family Guy. Animaniacs still passes for a kid's cartoon, but definitely has countless references to literature, politics and cinema that most kids wouldn't grab on to. Family Guy, on the other hand, is most certainly not a kid's cartoon, but a lot of its humor is subtle and requires knowledge of the subject to which they are referring. Maybe intelligence isn't so much the right word as trivial knowledge..
