The Shining? C'mon!
What was scary about The Shining? Other than Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!" ax-through-the-door, I thought it was extremely boring.
I think about that movie when walking down the seemingly miles-long hall to my apartment. I don't think about it when I'm trying to get scared.
I agree with the scary books thesis. Stephen King has written dozens of really good books, but none of the scary ones have been made into decent movies. Think about it- his best movies were The Green Mile, Stand by Me, and Shawshank Redemption.
King's horror is very scary: when it's in your imagination. When it's put on the screen it's usually just gross (think Dreamcatcher) or cheesy (The Stand) or boring (The Shining).
You want scary? Think about Nancy Pelosi as House Majority Leader!
