The interesting thing about marriage is that it isn't a right in this country, at least anymore- if you define a right as something you can exercise without asking for permission or obligating another. in the past, marriage was a sacrament- find someone (clergy, ship's captain or judge) to perform a service and bam- you're married. Maybe the Catholic Church didn't recognize a Presbyterian marriage, but so what. But then somewhere along the way, we gave up the right to marry (possibly in order to stick it to the Mormons because of polygamy) and now have to ask permission.
I think if the government is going to give credit to married people, it ought to define what that is. Perhaps it should be left up to the states, but at some high level, I think marriage should be defined.

Define Marriage
Now seriously - do you want the government establishing a law that defines what your relationship to your spouse is? Is the vote for that option in order to forbid others from marrying or to establish the universal rights for domestic couples?
