Oh no, my geekiness is out in the open!
Ahem, anyways, if you remember seeing Episode VI, the A-Wings were at the big ending Death Star II battle. They were the sleek, fast fighters with two relatively big engines. The craft is essentially flat and gets narrower as you go towards the front of the aircraft, which is where their name came from.
I first remember them as part of the group of fighters that peels away from the DSII when the Rebels find out the DSII shield is still active. Otherwise, an A-Wing was also the craft that got "intensified by the forward batteries" and rammed into a bridge of the Executor (Super Star Destroyer). This pretty much then caused the Executor to nose-dive into the DSII.
As far as the TIE variations go, I know the ubiquitous TIE Fighter (Tie/Ln) shows up everywhere. A TIE Advanced (prototype?) was piloted by Darth Vader when he got sent careening out of the Death Star Trench. For TIE Bombers and Interceptors, I honestly can't remember exactly where they showed up, but I know from other literature and games that they are present in the same time period.
The link I provided for the A-W also has bunches of info regarding anything else SW related; TIE Bombers and Interceptors are also listed there and as showing up in the movies;however their main titles are weird designators (TIE/sa and TIE/In respectively).

I would have voted for my own DeathStar ...
I didn't even know there were variations of the TIE vehicles. What's an A-Wing?
