Open question: why was your selection "distasteful"?

At the risk of opening up another firestorm like the last poll, I admit to being curious: what about your selected poll option makes it "distateful"?

Was it distateful in that it "goes against your moral beliefs", that it "is harmful to society at large", or something else altogether?

I chose #5 because I know that women get jealous enough when they're the only wife. I can only imagine the mental distress caused if a woman was in competition with sever other wives. I also see marriage as devoting yourself to 1 other person that you love. I just don't think you could adequately love multiple people, nor could they ever have the chance to love you back in full. And it just seems like an excuse to be an accepted male slut :-) I really base this on nothing more than personal experience and common sense. I'm sure there are valid arguments for polygamy, especially in ancient times, but I just don't see any good arguments in today's society.

Government regulated by cpeel :: NR4

To answer my own question - I selected Government regulated. To be fair I suppose that I don't find Government regulated marriages to be "distateful" but rather inapprorpiate.

I hold to the belief that the government should be involved in creating, tracking, enforcing, and disolving of contracts of any kind between two or more people. Such contracts include financial documents such as loans, titles, etc as well as social contracts like civil unions. I don't believe that the government has any business in regulating marriage as I see that institution entirely as a religious one and hence outside of government control.

Certainly the two often overlap but there is no reason why they must be synonymous. If two people want to be religiously married but not have any legal recogition of that status they should be able to. Likewise two people may want the legal recognition of their relationship (including all the rights and responsibilities) but do not care to have a religious ceremony - that should be possible as well.

As of now the two are tied together in what I consider to be arbitrary and illogical ways.

I chose "mail-order brides" as distasteful. If women wanted to rally around a cause of feminine exploitation, rally on that rather than porn. How different is the concept of a mail-order bride than coerced slavery?
