He never smoked, drank, or cussed.
You're getting a whole lot of "ooohs" and "ahhhs" from the OmniNerd crowd here. My inner-sarcastic-conscience is saying, "what? like that is hard?" I was singled out at W.P. by Mark and a few others for those same things and taken straight to the Thirsty Firstie on my 22nd B-day,...not my 21st (I didn't drink), because again, "like that is hard?" Actually, the only thing hard that night was the liquor.
Despite the awsesome presence of Mike Forbes walking the earth in the regalia of a south american dictator, I must still vote for Napoleon.
While many of the others in the list also simultaneously ran countries while conquering the known world, none of the others were dealing with the revolution in military affairs (RMA) that was moving warfare beyond the set piece warfare of the previous century. Moreover, He was creating doctrine for tactically employing armies that would eventually influence Eisenhower in WWII.

A General's General
I am surprised that one of the greatest military geniuses in our country to date, has received such a low percentage of the vote. Robert E.Lee is one of the most respected figures in our history. He led the Confederates in the face of staggering odds. His character was and remains impeccable, unlike the unscrupulous mercenaries with whom he is listed. (excluding Mark...I think)
Not only did he win the hearts and minds of his own men, but the respect of the northerners as well. In fact, the whole entire country was enamored of this gentle man. He was admired by his "enemy," and opposing general, Grant... who said he had never had such a formidable foe as Lee. Gen. Lee was an intelligent man, who was singled out at West Point by his peers for his brilliance. He never smoked, drank, or cussed. (can hot guy on guy Macedonians compete with his moral character...I think NOT! Yes, I add my thanks, as well, to Dilly for a great line that I WILL use when appropriate or not)
He has been highly praised for his valor, courage, and great skill as a leader. He didn't believe in slavery, and had freed all of the slaves that he had inherited, years before the war.
So, I base my vote on the character of the man AND his military prowess.
