Joseph Smith's history is so controversial, it is wonderful to finally have a reasonably comprehensive history that doesn't pull punches and yet isn't obsessed with turning Joseph Smith's life into something more dramatic than it was. Criticisms of the early Mormon prophet are virtually all addressed - but not in that manner. Bushman enlightens the reader by extensive research and documentation, not by argument or apologism.

Highly recommended - at least if you're interested in knowing the historical Joseph Smith.
