The Power of Negative Thinking?

Cup blog (coffee shop) by gheorghe on 18 May 2007, tagged as psychology

I have a feeling the regulars on this forum would rather die than be caught reading (or admitting to have read) The Secret, the latest craze in the self-help, positive thinking arena.

Since life is getting in the way of my spending 30 minutes summarizing this article, I invite you all to read it, then either comment on it or act on the call to action launched by the author: he wants to get Oprah to do a show on the power of negative thinking, as the only solution to actually prevent avoidable catastrophes in our lives (i.e., avoid positive thinking). Computer geeks are lauded in this article, so read on.

The power of Negative Thinking by Suebarron :: NR4

I have always thought that positive thinking was overrated. The secret to happiness is low expectations. Only joking, but it seems to work for many.

You really have to be able to just strike a balance between hoping for the best, and planning for the worst. Planning is not really negative thinking, it's trying to foresee how a given situation might play out and having a "plan B" in mind in case it doesn't go the way you hoped. Insurance companies make their existence on this state of mind. People with experience in life begin to automatically think this way because in the past perhaps they hadn't, and wished they had. Just being careful isn't "negative thinking" either. For instance once in a while I get the time to go mountain biking in the wilds near where I live. If I know I might go into unfamiliar territory, I take a cellphone, GPS, some snacks and extra water with me. When I start, I simply take into consideration that there's a possibility of some sort of accident happening; I don't dwell on it, I merely make some preparations because I know the probability is there. Someone whom I would define as a true negative thinker would just sit at home in the dark and never embark on this journey, because the fear of anything bad happening overrides any desire to go.

Coders and Quacks by Anonymous :: NR0

The article does point out the positive effects of assuming the worst by both doctors and programmers... I think it would be interesting to see, of the people who visit this site, how many are coders or doctors and if married, are they married to a coder or someone in the medical profession...

For example, my father is a mainframe programmer and my mother is a nurse. My wife is in med school and I am a web programmer. I have several pairs of friends who are both nurses or both programmers.

Does the law of attraction actually mean that those who make the world go round by thinking negatively gravitate toward each other?
