Teaching Children About Sex

Cup blog (coffee shop) by Brandon on 19 February 2007, tagged as family and psychology

Parental attitudes towards teaching children about the "birds and the bees" range from advocating strict abstinence until marriage to encouraging experimentation. Timing is also an issue, with some parents avoiding the issue indefinitely while others choose to debunk the "stork" myth very early on.

When is it best to teach children about sex? Does teaching them early increase the probability of experimentation (no matter how or with what principles it is taught)? Could delaying the discussion skew a child's perception of the value of sex—even within appropriate relationships or situations?

Whats out there by lilsis :: NR5

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I think it has a lot to do with the enviroment the child is brought up in. What kind of music, movies and T.V. shows are they exposed to? Do they have older siblings? Who are their firends? Do they ride the bus home? If it's made to look cool they will want to do it. I think as soon as they are exposed to it, it needs to be discussed.

How About Different Approaches by VnutZ :: NR8

You ask several direct questions which are very good. I'd like to add a small twist - what approach to abstaining is most effective?

As kids get older, one assumes they have a greater sense of responsibility from their increased life experience. It may be easier to teach older kids about sex and abstinence through the approach of "how your life changes with kids". On the flip side, smaller children will not appreciate this same approach. There is only so much reason you can really work through with a smaller child. Is making sex something to partially fear effective by highlighting all the things that go bad in terms of STDs, etc?

We have several teachers on this forum. What sort of guidelines do your respective school systems impose on the side of instruction through school? Is it a state-mandated course? Or was that a determination of the administration and PTAs?

Teen Pregnancy in Mexico by wyldeling :: NR6

Apparently, the Mexican province of Chihuahua has a serious problem with teen pregnancy. Approximately, 20% of all children born are born to mothers 19 and under. So, to combat this, they're giving out life-like dolls that are "programmed to cry for food, burp and wake up screaming at night until they are rocked back to sleep." Some even "show symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol or drugs, as if they were the offspring of addicts." All in all, I think it is a very clever way to introduce teenagers to the realities of having children.
