Pop Culture Ten Years Ago

Pencil blog by Brandon on 29 October 2007, tagged as pop culture, movies, and music

My high school ten year reunion having occured this past weekend, I took time to look back into what pop culture was like when I graduated in 1997. Here's what I found:

Academy Awards

  • Best Picture: The English Patient
  • Best Actor: Geoffrey Rush (Shine)
  • Best Actress: Frances McDormand (Fargo)
  • Best Supporting Actor: Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire)
  • Best Supporting Actress: Juliette Binoche (The English Patient)
  • Best Director: Anthony Minghella (The English Patient)
  • Best Original Screenplay: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (Fargo)
  • Best Adapted Screenplay: Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade)
  • Best Visual Effects: Independence Day

Grammys

  • Record of the Year: "Change the World" (Babyface, Eric Clapton)
  • Album of the Year: "Falling Into You" (Celine Dion)
  • Song of the Year: "Change the World" (Eric Clapton, Babyface / Wynonna)
  • Best New Artist: LeAnn Rimes

Billboard

  • Top albums
    1. Spice (Spice Girls)
    2. Tragic Kingdom (No Doubt)
    3. Falling Into You (Celine Dion)
    4. Space Jam (Soundtrack)
    5. Pieces of You (Jewel)
  • Top Songs
    1. Candle in the Wind (Elton John)
    2. You Were Meant for Me (Jewel)
    3. I'll Be Missing You (Puff Daddy / Faith Evans)
    4. Un-Break My Heart (Toni Braxton)
    5. Can't Nobody Hold Me Down (Puff Daddy / Mase)

The movies are decent, but I'm slightly embarrased by the popular music at the time. Of course, it's not that I actually liked any of what's listed, but it still represents the year I graduated. Then again, I'm not sure any other year would be much better.
