So, the OmniNerd code base pushes forward. By now you've probably noticed the new front page. Let me highlight some of the changes we just pushed:
- Removed the pulse due to a lot of feed back we've gotten that it's confusing. It was also loaded with AJAX scripting, which was making the underlying code a tad bloated. I think you'll find the front page loads a little faster now.
- Added the "oligarchy, democracy, and communism" front page sections. This is an idea that didn't make it from alpha testing to beta testing. However, it's been resurrected. The sections are exactly what their names imply.
- The Oligarchy - content is selected by an "elite panel," i.e., the moderators
- The Democracy - if the nerd masses vote it up, you'll find it here, regardless of what the moderators think
- Communism - all new, unmoderated content is equal and will be found here. This is the best place to see what's new in the "other" content categories.
- Removed the user menu from the side column. You'll find your user links in big, bold type in the main title now.
- Made the "Submit New Content" links very visible at the top of the side column. You no longer have the excuse, "I didn't know how!"
- Fixed some image caching issues. Pages with lots of images should render much faster.
I know this creates some gaps in functionality, i.e., the pulse did some things you can't currently do. We will find them a home soon, but we wanted to move forward with the front page. Hopefully, once all of this stuff settles down a bit we can remove that "beta" from the title. As always, we'd love to know what you think.
