GMail is GFailing Me

Cup blog (coffee shop) by jandaman on 02 May 2008, tagged as gmail and google mail

Ever since Mark McB set me up with an invitation to GMail all those years ago, I have always praised GMail to the masses. The huge storage limit, the grouping of conversations, the way it auto adds contacts to your list for you and now GChat. I have made so many of my friends switch to GMail from their previous accounts with Hotmail, Yahoo, or whatever. But the past week, GMail has really been dropping the ball. Now I am not sure if they are going through upgrades or server issues, but for about a week to 10 days, GMail has constantly been cycling through phases of "Temporary Errors" that have caused both GChat and GMail to crash.

Now I understand that sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved, but my real concern here is why Google or GMail have failed to address what these issues are. Are they upgrading or switching servers? They don't say. Just a generic message that says "Temporary Error (502)." I know it isn't just me, because all of my friends are complaining of the same thing.

I just want to know where to get answers on this.

Subset of Users by gnifyus :: NR7 :: on 01 May 2008

Hmm, I've been using GMail almost since it was first available and have never had a problem like you describe. (I just logged into it now to make sure.) Every once in a while, and not recently, it would say the severs are busy, but a few minutes later they would be back. I have had some goofy things happen with Google Docs since they recently incorporated the Google Gears 'Offline' feature, where you can save your Docs to your local disk until you reconnect to the internet. I'm not sure how to describe even what happens, but sometimes it just seems to get "stuck".

I'm not sure if this linked page will remain as is, so I'll copy what it says below. Apparently you are part of the unlucky "subset" of users. (Thanks for your continued patience)

We're aware of users reporting the Temporary Error (502) error on
login. Our engineers are investigating and we will keep you updated on
this thread. We appreciate your patience, and we apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused.

Thanks,

Update - we know that a subset of users are continuing to be affected
by this problem. Thanks for your continued patience.

It ain't me by anthonyanthony :: NR5 :: on 02 May 2008

I am not sharing your pain with gmail.

I've been using Gmail for a few years now and occasionally I get a message that is something like: "Loading your inbox is taking longer than expected. As an alternative, you may load Basic View." And if I choose to load the basic view, my Gmail set up does not look as aesthetically pleasing as it usually does.

But after a few minutes, I can toggle back to the suped up view.

Same here. I suppose GMail's AI is just digitally discriminating against the poster.

Its been beyond a pain in the rear to use Gmail lately. Not sending messages, sending messages but saying that it didn't send them, not loading things that I click on...quite frustrating. And there I thought it was because I'm on 3rd world satellite internet. I'm sure they'll fix it...they're google!

No problems here by Brandon :: NR9 :: 6 days ago

I've actually been quite happy with Google lately. I have a new Blackberry from work and I'm pleasantly impressed with the ease of navigating Google features on a handheld. The only hangup so far has been the inability to post events to different calendars on Google Calendar... although it's possible I just haven't figured out how yet.

Sounds like you're "The Subgroup" (stated above).

My Gmail's been doing swimmingly.
