The new search site Cuil has been touted in the media as being some sort of competition for Google, having in fact been co-founded by ex-Google engineer Anna Patterson, the designer of the search engine Google presently is using. So, to make a long story short, I decided to check it out. I had been fooling around with Garmin mapping programs recently, so the first thing I typed in was “cgpsmapper” which is a program used to compile custom maps for Garmin GPS units. It yielded zero results at the time of this post; not even the website for the product which has been in existance for years. Just to try and be fair I typed in “"Garmin custom mapping":http://www.cuil.com/search?q=garmin%20custom%20mapping&sl=long” thinking maybe this is the way its supposed to work. Results came up, but honestly, nothing I would find immediately useful.
My initial guess is that it will only take a few of these experiences and people in general will just wave their hands at this new search site as soon as the fifteen minutes of media coverage has run its course. Maybe my subject matter happened to be too obscure for such a new site. I would be interested in other viewpoints, especially from those who might begin using this new search engine on a regular basis. Try using the site for your favorite hobby or something. Some of you may have to turn “Safe Search" off… :-)

No O-Nerd article love by Brandon :: NR9 :: Show
I tried "cheap sprinkler system" – a search that returns my OmniNerd article on the topic as the first result in Google. On Cuil, my article didn’t show up on the first page at all. Instead, I got a handful of links to stuff on eteamz.com … whatever that is.
