Considering a Wii to Improve Marital Relations

Cup blog (coffee shop) by Brandon on 05 July 2007, tagged as gamessports

A Guitar Hero frenzy over the July 4th holiday has me more seriously considering an existing desire to purchase a Wii game console. Other than a Nintendo 64, I've never owned a game console, preferring PC RTS games to console-dominating FPSs. What brought about the change of heart, you ask? Surprisingly enough, my wife. Games like the tennis/golf ones on the Wii, or Guitar Hero for that matter, seem to be "wife-friendly," meaning they make for a suitable solution to the inevitable "Let's do something." - "Like what?" exchange - an area where Warcraft simply didn't cut it in the past.

Does anyone have experience with using a Wii for similar reasons? Could the initial acceptance and enjoyment of Guitar Hero and Wii games blossom into a long-lived marital past time? Or is it nothing more than curious feminine dabbling? Lastly, if I were to purchase one, does anyone have tips on games to buy or places to get the best deals?

First of all, I think you have to be real careful whenever you decide to purchase something; anything, with your outwardly expressed justification portrayed as, "It's for the both of us", when you know darn well it's really something you want. What I'm saying is; you need to be completely honest with yourself whether you are really intending this for the reasons stated; or are you secretly hoping her interest will wane?

That being said, it completely depends on the personality of your wife. Do you participate in other competitive activities and have good interaction while doing it? (No matter who is winning?) Perhaps that alone is a good indication of how well your Wii plan will work.

You don't exactly say so, but it seems like maybe the "Guitar Hero frenzy" on July 4th may have been held in a larger social setting? I know my wife will often join in and have a good time when a lot of other people are involved, but wouldn't be that interested at home without the other people.

My 16 year old son has a Wii so I know that from the few times I tried it, it has the potential for providing a lot of rainy day fun. In the tennis or baseball games, (which come with it I think) you fairly quickly begin to forget that you aren't actually hitting a real ball, and therefore might need to move some furniture so you don't wind up hitting walls or lamps with your hand. On a large screen TV, you can get very lost in it.

All in all a Wii is not a hugely expensive toy; the initial price seems to still be around $250, but then you might want some games, and no matter what you do, if you want to include your wife, don't forget to buy a second controller!

Sex is almost always a driver for innovation in technology. The very nature of the Wii controller pushes it towards more "physical" interaction than old style controllers.

Seems like there's an obvious market for both "exercise" and "couples" titles that take advantage of the Wii. There's already serious research being done on the intersection of video games and foreplay. The Wii seems like an obvious fit (NSFW).
