The Internet fantasy game world of Second Life, which has approximately 3 million users the world over, is getting just a little closer real life. You may remember that last month a Spanish non-profit organization created an avatar in Second Life to raise awareness about children in need. Well now governments want to tap the Second Life world in order get out their message and information. Sweden will be the first country to open a virtual embassy in Second Life. The Swedish government says the online embassy will function as "an information portal for Sweden."

In the last 24 hours $1,103,922 changed hands for virtual goods in this game. Apparently the economy in this game doesn’t have a virtual currency like your average MMORPG; rather its currency, Linden Dollars has an exchange rate commensurate with the US Dollar. To gain purchasing power in your average MMORPG, you gather virtual resources to exchange for virtual currency. Other ways of gathering virtual currency were discussed in previous posts. In Second Life you purchase virtual goods and resources with real US dollars. This includes virtual land, virtual houses, even clothing articles.
