State of the Nerd 2006

Layout article by markmcb, willwaddell, and Brandon on 01 June 2006, tagged as omninerdnews

With only 17 days until OmniNerd's 2nd birthday, we, the OmniNerd administrators, thought we would take some time from our normal routine and write a collaborative update to you, the OmniNerds. In our brief State of the Nerd, we look at where we've been and where we're headed. We hope the information provided within inspires you to help us make the next year successful in terms of both content and ideas.

Please take this opportunity to complement, critique, and (our favorite) criticize our site. We've got a few ideas that could radically change OmniNerd as you know it, so please, throw in your two cents about the future before we start coding!

First Collaborative Article by markmcb :: NR7

For what it's worth, this is an example of how the article draft system can allow multiple people to work on one article and then all have their names posted along with the article. A minor point, but good to know.

How about getting a Creative Commons license? That's good'n'nerdy!

Keep up the good work!

Figure 2 by tomtolman :: NR5

In addition to the occasional searches for our own articles, we keep a running log of the results of various search engines' results on a search for "omninerd." Figure 2 shows the upward trend of matches for this term.

Is this something that you are tracking manually or do you have a program running to track these results? Also, I notice a downward trend from March to May. Any idea what could be causing that?

Today, when I search for OmniNerd I get 33,000 results on Google, 40,100 results on Yahoo!, and 4,692 results on MSN. According to the graph, I expect to see over 50,000 results on Google and only 35,000 or so on Yahoo. Is that right? What are the red (Google Diff) and yellow (site index) lines showing?

Knowing that I run the risk of getting no response, I have a question for any readers that we have who often read the site, but seldom or never comment, submit news, or write articles:

What, if anything, would you be willing to contribute? In other words, if there was an ideal on-line "thing" you'd be willing to share with the world, what would it be? We often get feedback about time, intimidatation, motivation, etc., being the reasons for not contributing. I'm curious about the inverse, i.e., what would you contribute to if it existed?

Possible new face for O-Nerd by Brandon :: NR9

In an effort to emphasize what sets O-Nerd apart from its competition, we are considering a restructuring of the OmniNerd homepage. Instead of the "Articles/Comments" tabs at the top of the current front page, there would be 4 or 5 tabs as follows:

    1. Articles - Displays the last 10 articles with their titles, category icon(s), complete summary and possibly even the first paragraph. This is the default "top level" display.
    2. News - Displays basically the front page as it is today, minus the tabbed section.
    3. Nerdy Discussions or Conversation Points - Displays the last 10 discussions posted similarly to the News format, but not limited to "news."
    4. Latest Comments - Displays links to the latest 100 comments.
    5. Recent Polls - Displays the latest 10 polls with generalized results details.

Additionally, we are considering some kind of filter at the top of each section (or in the user preferences) to display or not display certain categories.

What do you, the O-Nerds, think about such a change as a means to emphasizing the areas in which OmniNerd excels (e.g., articles, clean/intuitive/well-organized/fast-loading site design, high quality content, etc.)? What about generally?
