Speaking Loudly, But How Big Is the Stick?
Once again, Iran is making statements threatening the West not to use the U.N. to penalize it for nuclear proliferation. Iran’s foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that, despite theories of Iran’s desire for nuclear arms, there was no legal basis for a referral to the Security Council. He also mentioned that such an action would ‘have consequences,’ although he declined to mention specifics.
Iran has recently defied an agreement with Germany, France, Great Britain, and the International Atomic Energy Agency to halt nuclear expansion projects and restarted uranium conversion. Iran claims that all uranium conversion is for peaceful energy purposes. Iranian officials doubt that action will be taken against them by the UN, as sanctions would cause the rise of oil prices.
Will the risk of increasing oil prices dissuade action by the U.N. Security Council against Iran? Will the U.S., Britain, and other world powers tolerate the antics of the nuclear-hungry Iranians? Does Iran have any basis to make such threats?

Nuclear Blackmail by Tallarn
At the end of the day what this really comes down to is nothing more than Nuclear Blackmail. The Iranians have simply taken a page from Pyongyang’s playbook, what they will leverage it for only the Iranians know for sure. So far the North Koreans attempted to leverage the ‘Nuclear Specter’ for everything from non-aggression pacts to brand new nuclear reactors and even free energy from South Korea.
Though the North Koreans have yet to be successful at actually receiving anything from their nuclear threats it is very convenient that everyone has been so occupied with the ‘Nuclear Specter’ that their immense Drug Trade has gone almost totally un-noticed. Some have even speculated that the drug trade from North Korea is state sponsored; wouldn’t it be nice for a drug cartel to be backed up by nuclear weapons?
But back to Iran and the issue at hand. Does it really matter if Iran has the nuclear weapons or not? As long as Europe and the US believe that they ‘might’ it has to be treated as a ‘credible’ threat. Thus the kiddie gloves must come out and we have to start discussing concessions and ‘what can we do for you today’.
What if Europe and the US adopted a new stratagem? What if Europe and the US stood back and said, ‘ok, prove it, then we’ll talk’. Why not force these rouge nations to detonate a nuclear weapon on their own soil to prove to the world they really have it?
I got another one for you, now that the Nuclear Bomb is the ‘gold standard’ for extorting money from the West, what are we going to do when all the other impoverished countries of the world decide to buy their own ‘former soviet nuclear engineers’? How will the west keep up with everyone who claims to have nuclear weapons in the hope of receiving free gifts from the west to give up their fictitious nuclear programs?
The real irony is that the west brought down the Soviet Union by out spending them on defense, now the west will be brought down by the nuclear threats of the entire developing world.
