Sex Chip

In 1997, the creators of South Park unleashed their cinematic masterpiece, Orgazmo upon movie-goers. The movie’s pornstar Mormon hero fights crime, defeating his enemies with the Orgazmorator device triggering spontaneous orgasms. Amazingly, just as science fiction devices from Star Trek are slowly becoming reality, so is the artificial orgasm. Scientists have created an implantable chip for the orbitofrontal cortex that can incredibly stimulate a person’s sex drive. Neuroscientists involved with the project state, “When the technology is improved, we can use deep brain stimulation in many new areas. It will be more subtle, with more control over the power so you may be able to turn the chip on and off when needed.” Perhaps the time is right for such a device as apparently, nearly half of women would give up sex in order to maintain their Internet connections.

Oh man, this could set us up for a whole world of trouble. This reminds me of Larry Niven’s science fiction stories about “wire-heading”—are we all going to end up sitting at home pressing the button on the remote control endlessly until we die of exhaustion or starvation?

Also, deep brain stimulation might be nice for a sex chip—but what about other uses? Surely there will be some therapeutic uses, but won’t there be a horde of nasty uses, too? Will prisoners or mental patients have chips installed to keep them under control? What are the ethics of that?
