Secret American Death Squads
Bob Woodward gained his journalistic fame and Pulitzer when he broke the Watergate scandal with fellow writer Carl Bernstein. Since then, Woodward has continued to be a part of Washington’s political journalism scene. The release of his new book, The War Within, reveals another bombshell. Talking about the revelation with CNN’s Larry King, Woodward discusses his knowledge of a secret military program designed to assassinate key terrorist leadership in the global war on terror and how its implementation, the Mahdi Army ceasefire and the 30,000 troop surge are all critical elements behind the improved conditions in Iraq. Woodward doesn’t let all the stops go, however. He admits revealing all he knows would get Americans killed, but acknowledges when the truth comes out, the public will be amazed.

I have heard speculation that this `program’ is a specific device that enhances the capabilities of UAVs. This view is supported by this LA Times article, although there seems to be a large volume of contradicting speculation elsewhere – ideas ranging from a novel directed-energy weapon to the whole `program’ being a cover story for high-level HUMINT, i.e. a mole.
One section in the LA Times article is particularly interesting in that it describes the `devices’ as being "roughly the size of an automobile battery, but are heavy enough that outfitted Predators in some cases carry only one Hellfire missile". Sounds to me like some kind of Sniper pod, but surely a UAV doesn’t need a pod(?).
I’m assuming that the journalist likening this `program’ to the Manhattan Project is indulging in the rhetoric typical of his breed – or else the fanciful ideas like directed-energy or high-altitude individual recognition may not be too outlandish.

I’m almost done reading The War Within. I’ve read most of Woodward’s books over the past few years. I’ll write more when I finish the book but I must say it is fascinating. He provides a very well-written, well-researched look at the surge (which I was part of).
