Russian Bomber Sorties
The Russians are up to more than just laying claim to the North Pole. Recently, their long range bomber crews have resumed flying sorties over American installations in Guam, a similar practice to those once conducted during the Cold War. Flying for thirteen hours to reach their destination, the Tu-95 heavy bombers, capable of launching a nuclear strike, represent a return of Russian military displays demonstrating global reach. Major General Pavel Androsov, head of Russian long range aviation says, "I think the result was good. We met our colleagues – fighter jet pilots from (US) aircraft carriers. We exchanged smiles and returned home."

Russia is back by Anonymous
Russia is definitely on the rise again. They’re getting over their "democracy" and realizing they want to be powerful. With all that artic oil coming their way, they’ll have plenty of money to spend on bombs, tanks, and scary laser weapons.
Welcome back, Russia by gheorghe
In my humble opinion, a little competition never hurts anyone. If we believe that there must be some checks and balances in the International Arena, the unchecked supremacy of the United States has had some nasty and unwanted consequences (freedom fries, flag burning, religious extremism, explosive vests, etc).
At the same time, a rival power cannot and will never be an exact replica of the United States. After all, China is doing quite well without being an open society, and Russia narrowly escaped implosion during Eltsin’s failed democratic experiment.
A rival super-power also keeps the United States honest. The French and the Germans can mutter all day long about US hypocrisy, but their voices will be dismissed by the American political elite. Castro and Chavez will certainly be dismissed as mere lunatics and irrelevant, but when [increasingly rich and militarily assertive] Russia speaks, people will be forced to listen.
It could be argued that the United States were forced to take a good, hard look at her own racial problems back in the sixties when hit with a wave of counter-propaganda in the international arena.
Now America could be forced to take a hard look at its own international public image, and an even harder look at its lack of oil resources and shameful/wasteful eco-ways.
So I’d say, welcome back, Russia. It’s about time Americans forget about their hysteria-induced Arabic lessons and brush up on some Russian skills. After all, one can have some civilized conversations with those who have given the human kind Tchaikovsky.
Who knows, the new era could even mean increased security. Russia could become an important ally of the United States in some more delicate arenas. They could even handle America’s dirty business (Russians will probably not cry foul when people’s rights are trampled upon for the sake of security).
And even if Russia becomes the old enemy, at least there is some clear structure, some stable, intelligent people in charge of the red-button, and so forth.

We should have let him finish it, instead of toasting them! Got to love that old SOB!
