Russia Shuts Off BBC "Propaganda"
In another example of Russian authorities intervening to monitor and dictate content to media outlets in that country, Russian licensing authorities have ordered Bolshoye radio in Moscow to suspend all BBC programming, claiming that the station’s license only allows it to air programs produced by the station itself. Though the BBC plans to appeal the decision, Bolshoye’s parent financial group, Finam, has labeled the BBC’s broadcasts as "foreign propaganda." Bolshoye was the last FM distributor for the BBC in Russia. Some now speculate that the government is attempting to wield a stronger hand in Russian politics and therefore has begun to abridge media freedom. Last year Russia drastically limited stations broadcasting Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America. Additionally, earlier this year the Russian News Service dictated that at least 50% of news must be "positive;
