A study published in the most recent edition of the American Heart Journal details the results of the largest study of the medical power of prayer. The study divided patients who were recovering after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery into three groups:
- those who received intercessory prayer after being informed that they may or may not receive prayer
- those who did not receive intercessory prayer also after being informed that they may or may not receive prayer
- those who received intercessory prayer after being informed they would receive prayer
The results showed no statistical difference in the number of complications in the first two groups (52% & 51%, respectively), but revealed an increase for those in the third group (59%). The death rates after 30 days, however, were similar across all three groups. The publication also includes a commentary on the limitations of and the methods used in the Study of Therapeutic Effects of Intercessory Prayer (STEP).
