Dennis Kucinich has recently become the butt of political jokes after making a statement about a personal UFO sighting. Shortly after calling President Bush crazy, the presidential hopeful admitted on NBC# that he saw a UFO while visiting friends. His statement rings a bell with roughly a third of the American population that indicate some sense of belief or encounter with UFOs. Mike Huckabee seized the opportunity to question why it is big deal that he believes in Adam and Eve in light of Kucinich’s belief in aliens.

Kucinich is not, however, the first American politician to admit having witnessed a UFO. Former President Jimmy Carter acknowledges having seen a UFO over his peanut fields in Georgia. Even former Senator John Glenn admits to having observed the unexplained while in orbit around the Earth. Former White House Chief of Staff John Podesta attempted unsuccessfully to obtain Pentagon records via the FOIA, "It is time for the government to declassify records that are more than 25 years old and to provide scientists with data that will assist in determining the real nature of this phenomenon." Scientists can begin by explaining the peculiar jitters exhibited by an unidentified object near Sirius B, captured photographically for OmniNerd.

Why, oh why, does Dennis Kucinich keep getting elected? Does Ohio see this as some sort of twisted, long-running practical joke?

Look – the man said he saw a UFO – an Unidentified Flying Object. He even was obviously trying to make the point that he was saying nothing more than that he saw something in the sky he couldn’t identify. That happens all the time.

What’s crazy to make the next step, saying, "Hm, I don’t know what that is – must be aliens from another planet come to rape the cattle."

In fact, air traffic controllers see UFOs all the time – until the transponder identifies it, or they establish radio contact and the pilot identifies it, and so on.

Get over it, people – this is just a right wing pundit trying to smear a liberal candidate.
