OmniNerd Version 2

We’re proud to announce the biggest news of 2006: OmniNerd version 2. The differences should be obvious to our regulars, but we’ve put together a short page to highlight the major upgrades/changes to the site.

About 85% of the revamp was stylistic. (The aesthetic deficiencies of the old site are what led us to begin work on version 2.) However, in addition to style we’ve almost completed the biggest functional addition, The Coffee Shop. Many of you have mentioned that you have topics that aren’t news and you don’t feel like turning into full articles, but would still like to discuss on OmniNerd. The Coffee Shop will fill that gap. If you’ve got a topic that you’d like to see on the site when we launch the Coffee Shop, send it to one of us and we’ll consider it.

As you browse the new layout, we’re certain you’ll have a variety of thoughts and may even find a bug or two. Please let us know! We’ll start two threads in the comments to assist with the feedback:

  • Critiques – Please let us know how much you love/hate version 2 in this thread. Just because we’ve posted this new look doesn’t mean we won’t be tweaking it. Don’t let your good idea go unheard.
  • Bugs – If you find something that seems out of place, broken, or just plain wrong, please mention it in the bugs thread so that we can fix the issue promptly.

I just wanted to thank a few people for all the help in bringing version 2 to the world:

  • Brandon – We’ve exchanged hundreds of emails, IMs, and voice calls during this process as we wrote, discussed, and revamped the new look. It’s always good to have someone just as anal as you are around.
  • Tom – The bug master. Tom made waking up scary because I knew I’d have an email waiting with no less than 20-30 new bugs to fix.
  • Will, Matt, Mike, Nick and PowerPointSamurai – These dudes sent tons of bugs and suffered through the millions of emails I sent requesting feedback on style issues.
  • Casey – I sent Casey an email randomly when we had finished the 10th iteration of development and asked for his virgin-eye critique. He nicely told me it was severely lacking in a few areas and gave a lot of insight that resulted in this version whether he realizes it or not.
There are lots of others that had interactions, but these are the big ones. If I didn’t list you, work harder next time! :-)
