Martini Glass Ceiling

Newspaper

article by Matthew Vea (VnutZ) on 19 September 2006, tagged as sociology

A new study published in the Journal of Labor Research shows that employees that engage in social drinking earn between 10 and 14 percent higher wages than their non-drinking counterparts. Economics professor Edward Stringham states, "social drinking builds social capital." The study indicates that men who drank socially in bars stand to earn an additional 7% as well. This puts women at a further disadvantage towards breaking the glass ceiling as they already earn 6.8% less on average. Studies demonstrate there are a variety of factors at play in estimating prospective salary wages. Job performance aside, however, a solid education still pays more (up to twice as much) in the long run than the lesser factors of social drinking or being male.

Really screwed by Anonymous :: NR0

So if you’re a non-drinking woman you really shouldn’t even bother working, huh? Just stay home and take care of the kids?

Now I can retire by romanizzo :: NR6

On an interesting side note, I once saw a study that said something along the lines of "if you can choose 10 I.Q. points or 10 pounds of muscle, you should choose the 10 pounds of muscle" much for the same reason as the social drinking builds social capital.

If I’m male, solidly educated, and an accomplished social drinker, shouldn’t I be making enough money to be able to retire early? Did anyone tell the DoD about this study? I should be making 17-21% more than my non-drinking, female peers. I demand a raise – I can drink my face off!
