Is the Nerd Rank system working?

What is the purpose of the Nerd Rank system. Is it supposed to be an indicator of the quality of a nerds contributions, or their frequency, or their fairness to other nerds. If we knew the purpose of the system then we might be able to assess how well it is working.

We might even be able to conform better to its purpose.

But how it grades the nerds is a big secret, presumably in order to prevent arguments. Perhaps it is just an ego trip for the old hands?

Sure, I am somewhat miffed at being demoted. This happened at a time when I was making more contributions and scoring more positive votes than any other nerd, with the possible exception of Anonymous.

If one of the aims is to encourage good contributions, then in my opinion it is a failure. Let’s fix it up, get some transparency into it, or throw it out.

Yeah, I know. by gnifyus :: NR7

Everybody uses it differently (or not at all).

Some seem to use it as a expression of distaste, or a way to show they disagree.

I use it for just about any fairly well thought out post whether I agree or not. If someone’s comment seems to add significantly to the conversation (and I notice it) I usually nerd up. I seldom nerd down, unless someone is being a deliberate jerk, or spamming (which gets deleted anyway.)

Omninerd was built with the nerdit system as a big part of what gets to the top of the list. so it’s really too bad it’s not used more.

Nerd Rank is some “secret” algorithm based on participation, articles and nerd-its. I don’t know why mine is still so high (the new job has distracted me lately.)

Nerd Rank is fairly complicated. Our intent was to make it clear who the best users are. In a nutshell, Nerd Rank looks at everything you’ve written recently, scores the content and its performance, and then scores you based on your contents’ scores. I think rather than trying to explain it in detail, I’ll respond with a question: what should Nerd Rank reflect?

It’s not so much that it’s a secret as it is that it’s overly complex and therefore hard to communicate. I think you’re right: such a metric is worthless if it’s not transparent to some degree. I would suggest a two-step rethink:

  1. Think of all the simple metrics that could apply to users/content
  2. Think of aggregate metrics that take the simple metrics as input and translates them into a single score or rank, like Nerd Rank

I think it is time for the character assassinations to be brought to light in lieu of the dwon scandal and now the negative nerd-its against Michale. It is cowardice. The fact that these folks can hide behind a shroud of anonymity is ludicrous and it needs to stop.
