finding solutions will require strength and force as well as humanity by Occams :: NR6 :: Show
An excellent article, but I think some more base motivations for war seem to have been overlooked.
Usually there are winners for every war. I don't mean the victors, but those who profit from it by supplying weapons or other materiel, or by gaining territory.
Ultimately war is political. It is the expression of violence through force - usually (but not always) the force of a nation. So political rivalries, jealousy, incompetence and inadequacy are always at play.
War is exciting. Some of the participants love the adrenalin rush it provides, and even enjoy killing.
If we are ever to find viable alternatives for war we will need to face these issues, and you don't get there entirely through humility, compassion, gratitude etc.
The UN gets a lot of criticism on this forum, but global multilateral agreements are probably the only way to bring together all the things needed to inhibit warring.
