FBI Uses Spyware to Crack Bomb Threat Case
According to an article on Security Focus, a student at Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington has entered a plea of guilty and been sentenced to 90 days in juvenile detention for making false bomb threats. The FBI tracked down the perpetrator using a sophisticated trojan horse known as CIPAV to identify the computer source of the threats posted to a MySpace account called ‘Timberlinebombinfo.’ After being installed from a MySpace account, the spyware is able to track the user’s IP address, identify any open ports, gather user information and determine the serial number of the operating system used.
