Concealed Carry - What If?

30_article_4142_thumb_concealed-carry

By now, it’s likely that you already know about the Aurora, CO shootings during the Batman: Dark Knight Rises premier. One crazed gunman managed to kill 12 and injure 59 using an AR-15, shotgun and dual .40 handguns. The weapons were purchased legally as Colorado is not one of the difficult states for acquiring firearms (for law-abiding citizens that is).

Already, people are questioning whether or not stricter gun control is the answer or whether more citizens with privately concealed firearms could have defended themselves. With regards to self defense, a concealed carry permit is relatively easy to obtain in Colorado and the state supports both Castle Doctrine and stand-your-ground. Only days ago in Florida, a senior citizen with a concealed firearm shot two thugs holding up an Internet cafe at gunpoint adding credence that a trained and armed society can often take care of itself [see the security footage embedded below]. Naturally, there are two sides to the coin and many admit that in the crowded, dark and smoky theater, it would have been difficult for a person to defend themselves without injuring others in the process.

Well, it wasn’t too safe for others in that internet cafe. In any hold up situation, I would prefer not to be near an old codger with a gun and delusions of grandeur. Our laws require us to leave crime fighting to the professionals.

We Americans are so lucky that our gun ownership laws are not a problem. Inagine how many more of these massacres we would have if they were.

Imagine what it would be like if every citizen were legally required to own a working firearm. What anarchy! Why, no country could possibly survive long under such circumstances!

That reference is the old NRA chestnut. The Swiss comparison for ignorant Americans.

Well, the Swiss character is law abiding, trustworthy, and fair, and there is very little street crime there. The Swiss actually have that “well regulated militia” that the US Constitution craves. That is a totally different situation from the USA where we have prolific, street gangs and drugs related crime that threatens every citizen.

The law in Switzerland is very hot on gun crime, and private ownership of pistols and military weapons is very strictly controlled. I would happily swap Swiss gun laws for American ones , but I doubt that the NRA would be very happy about that.
