China and Russia Openly Accused of Industrial Espionage

30_article_4003_thumb_chirus

Last Thursday, Congress received their unclassified Foreign Economic Collection and Industrial Espionage report detailing activities from around the world (particularly in the cyber realm) and their impact on the US. The report directly insinuates the Chinese and Russians are the top offenders for building their economies on American research and technology, excerpted directly as “the nations of China and Russia, through their intelligence services and through their corporations, are attacking our research and development.” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman rejected the claims stating, “online attacks are notable for spanning national borders and being anonymous. Identifying the attackers without carrying out a comprehensive investigation and making inferences about the attackers is both unprofessional and irresponsible. I hope the international community can abandon prejudice and work hard with China to maintain online security.”

Of course, it’s not without precedent that the United State’s own intelligence gathering efforts are making the news. The CIA has been detailed for its scouring of social media sites and local news sources. It’s an effort more or less described as a crossing of librarians, linguists and nerds that has yielded many successes in discovering up and coming intelligence events.

On a side note.... by EyeOfSage

This is interesting because just the other day, I saw the NYT article on Obama’s meeting with Chinese leaders. And Obama and Asian Leaders confront China’s Premier. Leaving the Chinese scratching their head, wondering if all that hollering are the real American intent or just Campaign scapegoat tactic followed by a bunch of copy-cat monkeys. I’m not sure if that’s the kind of reputation we want foreign nations to see, a country whose future leaders needs to act “big and tough” to impress the public. In fact, isn’t this the same tactic North Koreans use? They say all this crap about America and start shooting into the seas and yells this and screams that but nothing happened. I find it frustrating and irritating people are proud of American leaders acting in such immature ways. Also on a side note, we all know honest to God, why Obama must bring up human rights issue and criticize other nations, particularly China.

Of course there’s massive human rights problem in China, but I think people don’t understand Chinese politics well enough. Chinese central government ceased to be a single entity a long time ago. Now it’s more like multiple groups in the same party representing different desires and ideas. The most common two are probably the progressives who wants to incorporate economy and improve life through reforms and changes and more human rights and openness. The other groups are the conservatives, the hardliners who think China’s current problems attribute to capitalism and wants to go back to a more communist state. Chinese people are not brainwashed, I’ll tell you that. Talk to some of them and you’ll realize this. They are very harsh in criticizing their government when something unjust or oppressive happens. But the conservatives knows this and they also know how to manipulate the mass in China to side with them through nationalism. Every time a foreign leader criticize China, it is viewed as an attack not only on the Chinese government but the country as a whole. So every criticism about human rights give these conservatives more and more reasons and powers to push nationalism and slow down reforms.

Ironically the very act of trying to bring reform to China through criticism has achieved the opposite because changes must come from within. But our leaders knows this very well. The real reason why China’s in the spot light isn’t because our leaders cares about human rights, it’s all about the upcoming election, gaining favorites and trusts and votes, playing the hero, and more importantly giving people a scapegoat to distract them from the real issues. When election time draws near, I never pay attention to the news. It’s all garbage at this time.
