A Wiggle in a Walk

Newspaper current event by ldsudduth on 30 August 2007, tagged as mathematics

Jessica Alba has the perfect wiggle in her walk, making her the woman with the sexiest strut. She beat out Kate Moss, Angelina Jolie, and even Marilyn Monroe. Her wiggle was studied by a a team of Cambridge mathematicians, who have come to the conclusion that hers is the most perfect. Apparently, it is the hip/waist ratio that makes the wiggle; and Jessica has the perfect 0.7 ratio. According to the Cambridge team, a woman with a 25 inch waist and 36 inch hips has just the right proportions to carry off a sexy swagger.

All this makes one wonder--aren't there better mathematics to be solved, other than determining who has the perfect "Wiggle in her Walk?"

WOW by milhous :: NR5

Wow, so it took a bunch of mathematicians to figure out that 25 divided by 36 equals .7 ? That is amazing! Wait, so 5^2/6^2 equals .7? Holy Schnikey! Man...gosh...gee-wiz

If only cavemen had calculators, we could have known this simple equation sooner...thanks mathematicians, for your contribution to society!

Ummmmm, no! by Anonymous :: NR0

I'm glad to see mathematicians are investigating this. It's one of the first useful things they've done in a long time. Now we need to know why Kim Kardashian is just so friggin' hot. Get to it number jockeys!

Articles like this bug me. They're reporting on science - so where's the link to the original study?

I have questions about their methodology! Why do they assume a w/h ratio of 0.7 is "perfect" - how did they calibrate this thing? Where do they get the measurements? From the trade rags? Those are supplied by agents - people whose job it is to lie about their clients to get them jobs.

Sheesh. What's come of science reporting these days?

Not that they aren't pretty much dead on - I caught Into The Blue on cable last night. That's some walk she's got.

I've managed to uncover the details on how this study was conducted, and it's a total fraud! (Surprise!)

Turns out Clarion, the makers of a hair-removal product called "Veet", conducted a "survey" (that is, they sent an email around the company) to decide how they wanted the results to come out. While the survey was underway, they contacted Professor Richard Weber at Cambridge, asking for him to provide a mathematical foundation for their results.

Even before they collected their "survey" results, they already had some results in mind. "We want Beyonce to come out on top followed by other celebrities with curvy legs such as J-Lo and Kylie and celebrities like Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse to be at the bottom eg - skinny and pale unshapely legs are not as sexy." Nothing like trying to avoid bias, there.

Now, Professor Weber has even come out objecting to Clarion's press release declaring Alba the winner. He insists that the results he came up with show Angelina Jolie to be the winner, with Jessica Alba no higher than seventh place.

You know, it's one thing to ask a scientist (well, mathematician) to prostitute his professional reputation to move a few extra units of product, but then changing his results without even consulting him? I, for one, am outraged.
