Refusing the Crown

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 30 March 2007, tagged as politics

It is not unheard of for potentates to "refuse the crown" so as to appear humbly lifted to power, rather than climbing there willfully. Hyperbolically speaking, a Russian lawmaker has proposed just such a situation by asking that Vladimir Putin be allowed to seek a third term as president of the Russian Federation, and, furthermore extend Putin's four-year term to "five, or maybe seven" years. A spokesman for Mr. Putin said the president is not interested in a third-term and sees no need to change the constitution, even though some groups and politicians are clamoring for him to do so. Is Putin attempting to build a groundswell of support for a prolonged presidency or are his stated intentions genuine?

Putin wants to be Stalin by Anonymous :: NR0

From the developments in Russia, including the recent television biography glorifying Stalin, it is obvious to me that Putin wants to become a dictator like Stalin. If he does not become "president-for-life" I will be surprised, since he has shown willingness to eliminate any possible opposition.
