Just days ago, gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV barricaded himself into a small Amish schoolhouse whereupon he shot ten girls before taking his own life. Describing the aftermath, coroners were nearly at a loss for words and defined the scene as simply grisly. To date, five of the children have already died, a sixth will soon come off life support and funeral ceremonies are just commencing.Sam Stoltfus an Amish worker says, "We think it was God's plan and we're going to have to pick up the pieces and keep going."
The Amish are known for their restrictions on modern technology as a function of their religious beliefs. However, in the aftermath of the shooting, the victims were hospitalized for intensive care in the Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. Is it society's place to impose medical technology in order to save a life when it directly contradicts the essence of a culture? Or does the acquiescence of the Amish to accept the treatment indicate "exceptions" to true faith?
It just made the news here in PA that one of the pregnant ladies who was allowed to leave named her child after one of the victims; Naomi Rose. Naomi Rose Ebersol was the 7 year old child who was killed.

Is it society's place to impose medical technology in order to save a life when it directly contradicts the essence of a culture?
Having lived in two states with very high Amish poplulations (Indiana and Pennsylvania), it has been my experience with these kind, generous and wonderful people that they do not shun modern medical treatment. The things they shun of 'modern' world are anything that would connect them to the world. This includes, but is not limited to: Electricity, Telephones (although you will frequently see a telephone on a pole *off* of Amish farm land for emergencies), cars (although they can hire drivers and cars); televisions and radios (some more progressive orders use battery powered versions), musical instruments. All of these things contradict the spirit of humility that they cultivate.
What they shun are things that connect them to the World, based on their interpretation of Romans 12:2.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
They farm using tried and true techniques--horse/mule but with modering equipment. While they pay the normal taxes, they will never collect Social Security Benefits, unemployment, or welfare; because they believe it to be a 'handout'.
